Ideas for every kind of roof, terrace and balcony.

A few of the layouts we return to again and again. Use them as inspiration, mix them together, or bring your own ideas to the survey.

Idea 01 · Shade

Shade pergola with climbers

A light steel or bamboo pergola planted with gourds, passion fruit or flowering climbers. Within a season it creates a cool, dappled ceiling over seating or paths, and the climbers feed you as well. Best on roofs with strong afternoon sun and space for a 2.4-metre frame.

Idea 02 · Narrow spaces

Long-corridor container garden

Terraces and open corridors can hold a surprising amount of food when containers are lined up along one wall. We vary container heights for interest, keep a clear walkway and run a single drip line along the row.

Idea 03 · Everyday picking

Kitchen-door herb station

A tight cluster of herbs and salad leaves placed by the stairs or kitchen door. Because it is passed every day, it is picked every day — which keeps plants bushy and productive.

Idea 04 · For keen growers

Seedling nursery shelf

A shaded, sheltered shelf for raising your own seedlings. Seed trays and small pots stay protected from wind and heavy rain until plants are strong enough for the beds.

Idea 05 · Most popular

Family harvest beds

Six to eight raised beds laid out in two rows with a central path wide enough for a basket. Crops rotate between beds each season to keep soil healthy and pests guessing.

Mix and match

Four rules for combining ideas

Follow the sun

Put fruiting crops where the sun is strongest, greens where afternoon shade falls, and seating where it is coolest.

Respect the wind

Edges and corners are windier. Use lower plants or windbreak screens there, and keep tall climbers away from parapets.

Plan the paths

Keep at least 60 cm of path between beds so you can kneel, carry a basket and reach drain outlets.

Group by thirst

Plants with similar water needs share a drip zone, so nothing is drowned or left dry.
